COLUMBUS – Sitting at her desk a few weeks ago, Ohio’s data contact at the Democratic National Committee got a mysterious phone call from Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell’s office.
Out of the blue, Blackwell’s office said that they needed the most recent disc of information sent back and that they were sending a new disc to the DNC overnight. Sure enough, the next day the DNC received a replacement for the disc they had previously sent, along with a note asking for the return of the first disc at our "earliest convenience".
Well we now know according to press reports, that the original disc Blackwell sent to the DNC -- and to nearly two dozen other recipients -- contained the Social Security numbers of over 5 million Ohio voters.
That’s right, Ken Blackwell’s office released the Social Security numbers of five million Ohioans who are registered to vote.
What’s odd is that when Ohio University released Social Security numbers they contacted all of the people whose numbers were at risk. When private companies release Social Security numbers they contact the consumers affected.
Ken Blackwell says that there is no problem because he asked all of the recipients to return the data. The DNC complied and sent the sensitive information back immediately.
But so far, Ken Blackwell and his staff haven’t notified those 5 million voters whose Social Security numbers were released.
Every Ohio voter whose personal information was compromised needs to know what happened. Forward this email to your friends and family in Ohio and encourage them to join the call for Ken Blackwell’s accountability.
